Advice for Family Caregivers
Posted By Maryann Porosky On MAY 16,2017
At Caring Choices, we understand that many things are beyond your control. And yet, as a family caregiver, you feel responsible. This month we explore several situations that will draw upon your wisest and most flexible self:
-
Avoiding the "war of the wardrobe". When a relative with dementia begins to dress inappropriately, it's time to step in. But dressing is an intimate act and a highly personal form of self-expression. Your loved one will have strong feelings about what he or she wants to wear. From buying several versions of a favorite top to selecting dementia-friendly garments, we provide you with tips to reduce conflict over clothing.
-
Preventing a second heart attack. Optimal recovery from a heart attack includes serious lifestyle changes: diet, exercise, sleep and stopping smoking. These are not easy to accomplish. It's not all a matter of willpower. Frustrating as it may be to watch your relative relapse, pushing from the sidelines doesn't help. Find out what you can realistically do to support your relative to make the changes needed to avoid another heart attack.
-
"Promise you won't …" A parent's fear of nursing homes may pull on your heartstrings and draw upon your natural response to shield them. But who can predict the future? If your parent is asking for reassurance, learn ways to respond honestly and with love.
